I am originally from Ottawa,
Kansas. After graduating from high school, I
attended Kansas State Teachers’ College (now Emporia
State University) from 1969 – 1973, earning a
Bachelor of Music Education degree, and was
qualified to teach elementary and secondary school
music. My concentration instrument was euphonium,
and I was a member of the marching and symphonic
bands. While working on my degree, I became
interested in composition. I followed my composition
teacher, Michael Hennagin, to the University of
Oklahoma in 1974, where I received a Master of Music
degree in composition. Upon graduating, I taught
middle school band between two small schools in a
rural area outside of Oklahoma City. After a couple
of years of teaching, my interests turned to
carpentry and earning a living as a self-employed
cabinet maker and trim carpenter. But music remained
my constant interest, and after receiving a call to
ministry in a Baptist church in Norman, Oklahoma, I
began my thirty-eight year career in music ministry.
I served churches in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Missouri,
before moving to Spruce Pine First Baptist Church in
1994. While serving a church in Gladstone, Missouri,
I also attended Midwestern Baptist Theological
Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri, from 1990 – 1993,
where I received the master’s degrees in Church
Music and Religious Education.
I was Minister of Music and Religious Education in Spruce
Pine for eighteen years. From Spruce Pine, I was
called to First Baptist Church of Morganton where I
served as music director from 2013 – 2020. During
all my years of ministry, I have directed adult
choirs, youth choirs, preschool and children’s
choirs, senior adult choir, handbell choirs,
directed and participated in a contemporary praise
team, have been a soloist, Sunday School teacher,
Youth discipleship leader, engaged in worship
leadership and service planning. I have also been a
member of the North Carolina Baptist Singers and
Orchestra since 1994, playing trombone and singing
in concerts around the state. I traveled with
Baptist Singers on mission trips to South Africa in
1998, Alaska in 2002, and Brazil in 2008. I have led
hand bell choirs to participate in regional state
hand bell festivals, youth choirs to participate in
state Youth Choir festivals, and youth and college
groups to take part in missions projects around the
country. While in Morganton, I directed Christmas
choral programs featuring, among other things,
Vivaldi’s Gloria, a Moravian Love Feast, and the
carols of Alfred S. Burt. I also co-directed a
community combined choir, with members from Burke,
Catawba, McDowell, and Buncombe counties, for
several years in an annual Christmas program. In
2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic,
when almost all musical activity in churches came to
an abrupt halt, I decided my time had come to
retire.
I am married to my wife Ann. We have three children and seven
grandchildren. Ann and I currently attend First
Baptist Church of Burnsville, where we are involved
in the music program. I am also playing trombone in
the church’s brass quintet and in the Toe River
Chamber Ensemble brass quintet and orchestra.
Elizabeth Boulter, Alto Soloist
Elizabeth Boulter began her music education as a
child singing vocal quartets with her parents and
brother, playing the recorder with her family, and
singing and playing clarinet in the music programs
of the Yancey County public schools. She played in
the band at Cane River Middle School and sang in the
show choir and played in the band at Mountain
Heritage High School. Elizabeth continued her
musical studies at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill, playing clarinet in the UNC Wind
Ensemble and the UNC Symphony Orchestra and singing
in the UNC Chamber Singers and the Carolina Choir.
She majored in Music Education and spent
twenty-seven years of her thirty-year career
teaching music in the elementary schools of Yancey
County. Elizabeth plays clarinet in the Toe River
Chamber Ensemble and has sung with our Community
Choir for many years in numerous performances of
great works including Handel’s Messiah and several
previous performances of Vivaldi’s Gloria. She has
been the alto soloist for several of these concerts.

bio
Jessica May, Soprano Soloist
Originally from Greer, SC, Jessica May has been
singing for locals and abroad since she was a young
girl. Music has always been a major factor in her
life, and so she was thrilled when she was accepted
into the South Carolina Governor's School for the
Arts and Humanities for voice and piano studies.
Mrs. May graduated with honors and continued her
musical studies at Converse College, where she
received a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance
and Music History. Throughout her collegiate and
post-collegiate career, Mrs. May participated in and
was a featured soloist in local community events /
performances and abroad. In addition to many
performances and solos, some of Jessica's favorite
roles have included: Marcellina from Le Nozze di
Figaro and Adele from Die Fledermaus. After a short
break, Mrs. May returned to Converse College to
complete her Master's of Music Education degree. In
2011, Jessica began teaching elementary music and
continued to teach music after moving to the
Asheville area with her husband, David May. Jessica
proudly served the congregation of First Baptist
Church, Burnsville from 2015-2017 as their Director
of Music. Currently, Mrs. May serves as the Director
of Development for the Asheville Symphony and her
